The 82nd Annual General Meeting of the Stair Society will be held in the Mackenzie Building, Old Assembly Close, Edinburgh on Saturday 18 November 2017, by courtesy of the Faculty of Advocates. The business part of the meeting will take place from 10.30 to 11.00 am, after which tea and coffee will be served.
At 11.30 am Professor CH (Remco) Van Rhee, Professor of European Legal History and Comparative Civil Procedure in the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, will deliver the Society’s annual lecture, his title being 'Who is in control? Historical perspectives on the role of the judge and the parties in civil litigation'.
Professor van Rhee studied law at the Universities of Leiden and Edinburgh. He taught Roman Law at the Universities of Leiden and Utrecht before being appointed at Maastricht. He publishes, teaches and supervises students in the field of comparative law, civil procedure, history of courts and adjudication and European legal history in general. He has a special interest in the harmonisation of civil procedure, both in Europe and on a global scale, and in best practices in this field.
