Legal Papers of James Boswell: New Stair Society Volume Published

We are delighted to announce the publication of  our 63rd Volume, the second volume of The Legal Papers of James Boswell edited and annotated by Boswell expert Hugh M. Milne. This volume includes James Boswell's legal papers from 12 November 1767 to 11 November 1769. These papers give' a unique insight into the day-today work of a busy advocate, and the practice of law in general, in eighteenth-century Scotland'. (p. vii)

James Boswell (1740-1795) is best known as a biographer and diarist whose writings have shaped our views of eighteenth-century life. Less well-known are the many legal papers Boswell wrote as an advocate. This Volume will be of interest not just to legal historians but also lawyers, historians, and Boswellians.

We would like to take the opportunity to remind you that all Stair Society members have access to our previous volumes via HeinOnline (currently Volumes 1-59; indexes are available for Volumes 60-62). Stair Society Members can access HeinOnline by logging in to the Members Section at our website

One of the benefits of Stair Society Membership is that Members receive a copy of each of our volumes published while they are members. Since our inception in 1934, the Society has published more than sixty handsomely produced hardback volumes and it is our aim to publish at least one volume each year. Some of these are of antiquarian interest, while others are of wider intellectual significance. Others still are useful to practising lawyers.
